Since Thomas Merton died in 1968 much has been made in some quarters of his “flirtation with Eastern thought”. Thankfully we in the West have grown up a little bit since that time. Many are not as threatened by Eastern spiritual traditions. While making The Many Storeys and Last Days of Thomas Merton I explored this theme of Merton serving as a bridge between West and East. The great Franciscan Richard Rohr brings interesting insight to the matter. Here is another excerpt from the interview Richard Rohr granted me in 2014.
